The idea is to keep a stick in the hands of the players during the summer months and to play in a venue that's unfamiliar. The players must learn to adapt to different circumstances, since this game is radically different; no out of bounds, ricochets off the boards, tiny goals, massive goalie gear, etc. The very compact play area, smaller than the restraining box in field, forces the players to make quicker decisions, more accurate passes, and to anticipate an open teammate at any moment. As a rule of thumb, Canadian lacrosse players have substantially better stick skills, think of Zach Palmer (Johns Hopkins), Mark Matthews (Denver), Kevin Crowley (Stony Brook), Cody Jamison (Syracuse), Zack Greer (Duke), John Grant Jr. (Delaware), and Gait Brothers (Syracuse).
Offensive players are highly encouraged to work on their off-hand stick skills, latest dodge/move, new shooting technique, and fine tune their shooting accuracy in a venue which they don't have to worry about turnovers, looking silly, or the ire of a screaming coach.
Defensive players are to work on proper footwork, body positioning, and not be dependent on a 6 foot pole.
